Lt. Kara Foster is a tactical action officer (TAO) on the USS Nathan James. She is one of the three female officers on the ship. She is bunkmates with Lt. Alisha Granderson. She is originally from Kansas.Foster oversees the crew that is responsible for the combat navigation of the ship, including sonar/radar readings, course plotting, and deployment of the ship helicopter and missiles. She was involved in an intimate relationship with Lt. Danny Green (which is forbidden while at sea, according to Navy regulations). Green's overprotectiveness during the mission to rescue Dr. Quincy from the Russian ship alerted Cmdr. Chandler to their relationship, and they broke up. They both received disciplinary action. Foster discovered she was pregnant while volunteering as a human test subject for Dr. Scott's experimental cure. She didn't tell Green; instead, Green found out while he was sitting at her bedside when she had a bad reaction to the experimental cure. When she recovered, Scott informed her that her baby would be born immune to the virus.Foster was on board the ship when it was taken hostage by the Maryland State troopers, on orders from Amy Granderson. She assisted XO Slattery and Dr. Rios in caring for Quincy when he was shot by the troopers while trying to protect the lab. After Quincy died, she was taken to Avrocet and Dr. Himata (on orders from Amy Granderson); Himata was going to use the stem cells from her unborn fetus to manufacture the cure (since he couldn't find the Primordial strain that Rios smuggled out of the lab and Slattery hid on Quincy's suggestion). The nurse assisting Himata was clearly uncomfortable with what he was about to do and untied one of Foster's hands so that she could defend herself and her baby. When the power went out, Foster stabbed Himata in the chest with a large syringe, killing him. She was rescued by Tex and Dr. Scott and she and Dr. Scott made it back to the ship.Foster was part of the land crew in Norfolk that went around to the safe zones to deliver the cure, and also to look for members of their families who may have survived. Foster, accompanied by Green, first went to her mother's house but found a mess and missing bottles of liquor (Foster's mother was an alcoholic who moved from Kansas a year ago, on Foster's request). She later found a note form her mother telling Foster that she'd gone to the local bowling alley. When Foster and Green arrived at the bowling alley, they discovered that it had been turned into a safe zone, guarded by Navy SEALS. Foster found her mother inside and they had a tearful reunion where Foster's mother admitted that she hadn't drank any liquor for over five months, and that the bottles of liquor in her house had been stolen. When Foster and Green were about to leave, Foster's mother told Green to take care of her daughter and her baby; upon seeing Foster and Green's surprise (they had't told anyone about the baby or their relationship other than Chandler and select members of the ship's officers, and Dr. Scott), she said that she could tell about their relationship by looking at the two of them together, and of Foster's pregnancy by looking at her face. Foster promised to return to Norfolk in 4-6 weeks, and Foster's mother agreed to move back into her house.Foster was named tactical action officer (TAO) by Chandler after TAO Baker was killed by a Maryland State trooper. Even though Navy regulations stipulated that a pregnant woman couldn't be at sea after her 20th week of gestation, Chandler thought that Foster was the right person for the job and agreed to let her do it as long as she felt physically up to it. Foster sometimes questioned Chandler's decisions during the hunt for and evasion of the British Navy sub captained by Sean Ramsey and his brother Nathan, but she did as he asked anyway. Show less «
